During my conversation with Zachariah he said something that stuck in my head for a very long time.
“People always ask if I remember when’s the first time I listened to hiphop. Hiphop is like water. Do you remember the first time you drank water? No, it’s apart of life … It’s been there.”
This really got me thinking about what it means to genuinely LIVE Black music. Not just love it, not just to be a fan of it, but to genuinely live it because it’s apart of your culture and your every day life. This is what speaking to Zach did for me. It showed me that some things are so intrinsic to the Black experience that a relationship to them cannot even be described by some people. It’s like trying to describe how it feels to be born with the skin you possess. It’s always been there, so not many can overstate the feeling.
Zach is a California native with roots between Sacramento and Los Angeles.
